METU Travels Around Turkey with “Science Cafe”

The "Science Café" event, the first university organization held in Turkey among the "Cafe Scientifique" events that first appeared in France and later became widespread throughout the world, is composed of talks organized by the participation of METU academics in public places such as cafes and youth centers in the topics related to the society to attract attention to and raise awareness about science in society.

METU travels around fifteen cities where METU Alumni Associations are located with the Science Café project organized to conduct interviews with scientists in public spaces in cooperation with METU Alumni Associations. The first Science Cafe was organized in Mersin with Asst. Prof. Korhan Özkan from the Institute of Marine Sciences on "drought"; the second one was in Eskişehir on "Palm Oil" with Assoc. Prof. Yeşim Soyer from the Department of Food Engineering and the third one was in Antalya with Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bilge Demirköz on her "International Rising Talent" award granted under L'Oréal – UNESCO International Science Women Award Program and on "radiation". The fourth Science Cafe was held in Adana with Assoc. Prof. Adil Oran from the Department of Business Administration on "entrepreneurship". Other Science Cafe events were held in Cyprus on "solar energy" as presented by Prof. Dr. Raşit Turan from the Department of Physics and President of GUNAM; on "exam stress" by Assoc. Prof. Aslı Bugay from Department of Guidance and Psychological Counseling, Northern Cyprus Campus. Another Science Café event will be held in Gaziantep on "Göbeklitepe" with Assoc. Prof. Çiğdem Atakuman Dr. From the Department of Settlement Archeology in December.
